Within the cultural season of, Astronomy Department & Space/ College of Science/ Baghdad University, in presenting the academic lectures, in the main hall of debates Dr. Fouad Mahmood delivered the scientific titled lecture about

“Developing   Criteria for Crescent sighting in Islamic & Arab History “

On Tuesday 3/January/2017, in the presence of the Head of the Department and a group of teaching staff with both postgraduate and undergraduate students.

The lecturer mentioned that human interested in observing the universe and recording some astronomical phenomena for a long time that happen and studying the movement of celestial objects and taking the advantage from the regular cyclic motion time many objects to know directions , timings , dates to organize life affairs , agriculture, worships , and setting calendars.

At Babylonian era about 3500 years ago, the scientists found documented records for many of sky objects, astrological phenomena, specially what is concerning to the sun and the moon , they discovered the lunar saros series (18.6) year and setting a (12 ) degree standard to observe the moon .

The Arab interested in Astronomy since 2000 years BC, in addition to the role of Astronomy at their beliefs and their worships, both Astronomy and Astrology played an important role in setting the economic and military policy of the state and so on …., the Babylonian limited places for observations besides the importance for the Astronauts in forming the state economic policy etc. the Assyrians and Pharaohs also cared about this field. The Islamic Arab astronauts tried to form astronomical standers for moon sighting associated with relative location for the Sun and moon, as well as they located positions for monitoring to limit criteria for predicating crescent sighting after sunset for day of watching. Moreover, they took into their accounts the geometric factors that concerned to the moon sighting based on their places in previous days, as some of these measurements depend on the angle between the sun and the moon or on their difference of time .

When the Islam came, the Muslim Arab Scientist developed the observations and the criteria relating to the moon sighting because of the Islamic Arab calendar based on moon sighting, this research shows a presentation on developing the criteria for moon sighting in Islamic Arab History and it illustrates the contributions of Islamic Arab civilization in Astronomy.
